Local History

Learn how to use resources to  discover the past in your local area

Discover what resources are available to help find out about the history of a local area. Learn how to use these resources to extract information about the changes and developments over the last 150 years.

The workshop will focus on

  • Using oral history to find out about life in a locality 150 years ago
  • Studying maps to see changes and development of a locality over a period of time
  • Using a census to learn about people in the past who lived in a locality
  • Looking at photographs to find out about a locality during the past 100 years

This workshop has been developed for schools in and around Manchester, particularly Salford.
However, this workshop is ideal for schools in other areas at the start of their local history topic. The session provides a starting point for this topic, introducing children to different methods of research, and how to use them.
